Nazareth – Hope in the Valley (By Samuel Kamminga)

Like Jesus’ home town, the Valley in the city of Galati is commonly seen as a place where nothing good could come from (Gospel account of John 1:46). Just beyond the sight of Domneasca strata (the lord’s street) and forgotten by the remainder of upper Galati, the neighbourhood of the Valley falls victim to the school system, collapsing buildings, political corruption, and a 3-foot flood plain from the Danjube River. The children, especially those of Roma heritage, are victimized by many teachers in the public school system through beatings and harsh verbal abuse. Today I had the privilege of meeting four young men who grew up on the streets of Galati. Pre-handshake, I was thrown off by the familiar stench of glue, seemingly the same adhesive I had used as a young boy to assemble model cars. This glue, which serves as a cheap cocaine visibly rots teeth as it invisibly rots the brain. My superficial impression was soon put to shame by their openness and friendliness shown to a foreign stranger (me).

It is the combination of the unreserved hospitality of these men and the compassion I have received by the kids in my neighbourhood that makes it easy for me to believe (and find hope in) stories shared to me of extravagant generosity expressed by children and some adults in the Valley. David (my supervisor) shared with me stories of children I know with next to nothing collecting offerings for families with even less. He also shared with me stories of parents denying themselves food so that a neighbourhood child could have their portion of the meal they had prepared, and a place to sleep in a room already squeezing in 10-20 people.

I’m starting to understand stories like Jesus’ praise of the widow’s offering of a penny (Mark 12:41-44), and the early Church’s understanding that having abundance is stealing from the poor. What if Jesus really meant it when he said his kingdom belongs to the poor (Luke 6:20)?

God was doing something miraculous in Nazareth, and God’s doing something miraculous here in the Valley of Galati.

Copiii de la Fundatia Cuvantul Intrupat au primit calculatoare in dar de la Asociatia Ateliere Fara Frontiere

În această toamnă, Fundaţia Cuvântul Întrupat a primit o donaţie de 9 calculatoare din partea Asociaţiei Ateliere Fără Frontiere, pentru a fi folosite în lucrul cu copiii sprijiniţi prin proiectele fundaţiei.

Periodic, prin programul de donaţii IT, ASSOCLIC, Ateliere Fără Frontiere lansează apeluri de proiecte adresate asociaţiilor, instituţiilor şi şcolilor, apeluri în urma cărora cele mai bune proiecte sunt selectate, iar organizaţia sau instituţia aplicantă primeşte calculatoare ce vor fi întrebuinţate pentru a-i ajuta pe copii sau tineri să-şi îmbunătăţească abilităţile de utilizare a acestora, ca parte a demersului educativ şi de integrare.

Fundaţia noastră a propus două proiecte, unul pentru copiii, adolescenţii şi tinerii ce frecventează Centrul Comunitar «La Vale» din Galaţi, iar al doilea pentru copiii şi adolescenţii sprijiniţi prin Centrul din comuna Tudor Vladimirescu, serviciu aflat în prezent în plin proces de amenajare, dotare, autorizare şi acreditare.

«Suntem bucuroşi să-i putem ajuta în continuare pe copii să înveţe lucrul cu calculatorul, acum cu aceste echipamente mai bune. Majoritatea copiilor nu au acasă un calculator, unii nu au nici măcar energie electrică, iar în zilele noastre a avea acces la un astfel de echipament şi abilităţile necesare pentru a-l folosi nu este un moft, ci o necesitate. Pe durata celor 9 luni cât durează proiectele, copiii vor învăţa lucruri noi, se vor documenta pe internet pentru temele de şcoală, vor învăţa să scrie şi să deseneze, dar se vor şi juca pe calculator. Vom organiza chiar un concurs de dactilografiere şi o expoziţie cu lucrările lor. Sperăm ca toate acestea să-i ajute pe copii să aibă şansa unei vieţi mai bune», spune Laurenţiu Archip, educator Cuvântul Întrupat.

Partenerii noştri de la Ateliere Fără Frontiere ne-au povestit despre activitatea lor: colectează echipamente folosite de la companii, le recondiţionează în atelierul propriu unde lucrează tineri provenind din medii defavorizate, iar în cele din urmă fiecare calculator are practic o nouă viaţă, ajungând suport educativ pentru alţi copii sau tineri. Este, înainte de orice altceva, o poveste frumoasă despre cum oamenii dau valoare lucrurilor, în dorinţa lor de a-i ajuta pe cei care au nevoie.
